Imagine an average Sunday. Imagine waking up just like any other day. But then, add just a few short hours, and realize that you’ve just bought a new car – no prior planning, no nothing, just a simple quick deal. I’ve always been impatient in making decisions, but this has to be a new record for me too.

With the second trip of the year done, many of us are left with mixed feelings. We had once again an all together amazing trip, with plenty of track time mixed with just the right amount of R&R. On the other hand, the long, cold and dark winter season is approaching, and it will be many – way too many – months until we can be back again.

We all know that braking generates tons of heat – just a glimpse of a brake rotor glowing red should be enough to make this point rather clear. Obviously the heat isn’t limited to the rotor only – anything nearby will get an equal share of the heat. TakSpeed has dediced than they can do something about this, and as I haven’t seen hardly any reviews of their Titanium Brake Shims, I just had to give them a try myself.

If there’s one thing we Finns usually agree on, it’s that the weather is never perfect. Either it’s too cold and rainy, or too warm and humid. Or too windy. Or maybe too bright or dark. This seems to be in our genes, and we just can’t help it. Recently it’s become clear that the same applies to cars too, especially the turbocharged ones.

While spring had barely started here in Finland, a group of freaks decided to take a head start to the summer. A group of 10 cars headed to the Finnlines ferry terminal in Helsinki, with a very clear goal in their minds – the Green Hell itself. This would be my third time there, or the second “proper” one – but who’s counting anyway ;)

Plenty of events colored the trip, and as there would be too much to write about it all, I have to focus on my own view. Undoubtedly others will let you know of their own experiences.

Christmas is here again! Oh, wait – no it’s not. But it just as well could be, at least for the ‘freaks – the spring time usually includes a fair bit of shopping :)

carbonio

Here’s my first contribution for this year – the Carbonio intake. The intake inlet itself is made of very high quality carbon-fiber, with a show-quality finish. It also comes with a drop-in oil-less washable replacement air filter, which is a direct replacement for the OEM paper filter. Installation itself was a simple 30 minute job, detailed instructions were included in the package.

One easy way to spot the approach of spring is to ask a Carfreak how much time he/she has spent on thinking of upgrades and/or changing cars. You’ll likely get an answer such as “daily”, or at the least “much more than normally”.

With the suspension and brakes taken care of (for now), the A3 had already transformed into a quite enjoyable track tool. For me that is. One major problem was unfortunately still present – understeer.

If you’ve driven any of the recent VW MkV platform cars (or most other VW cars to be more exact), it should come as no surprise that the chassis is tuned for safe understeer rather than oversteer. While this works fine for your everyday driving, it’s far from fun on the track. I’m not looking at massive oversteer either, but rather a balanced setup, with possibly a slight hint of oversteer.

It’s just matter of a few days until the public release of the new carfreaks.net site. There’s still plenty to do until we are ready, but looks like we’ll make it. This will be the 1.0 release of the site, and while it may look complete, it is far from that. Work will immediately continue to bring even more content and features online. Being the perfectionists that we are, I doubt that we’ll ever be fully satisfied with the results. On the other hand, this has the benefit of pushing ourselves to fix the parts of the site we don’t like.

As already mentioned, I had layed my eyes on a brake upgrade kit. And you all know where that usually leads to. Now that the cooling was taken care of, it was time to move forward.

With the help of a fellow ‘freak – thanks Pasi :) -, I got a good deal on the Brembo Junior GT kit. The kit comes with 330x28mm cross-drilled (or slotted if you prefer those) 1-piece rotors, “Lotus” style 4-pot calipers, carriers, sports brakepads and stainless steel brake hoses. A complete package with everything needed for the upgrade, and good instructions with which the installation is a breeze.
