Wheels gone black

The black Techart Turbo usually rolls on Techart Daytona 3-piece wheels and the stock wheels are left for track use. This year 2007 the Techart wheels have Michelin Pilot Sport 2 rubber on them, great tires for everyday AND sporty use!

But for the track duty, semi slick tires are the way to go. The car has had 2 sets of them, Pirelli PZero Corsas and the well-known Michelin Pilot Sport Cups.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are one of the fastest street legal tires and their grip at the track is phenomenal. Too bad they are so soft that they won’t last long and in wet and cold conditions the lack of grip is so evident.

This spring we heard about Toyo’s new semi slick tire, the R888. Porsche-people told that they last much longer than Pilot Cups, are okay in wet and are 95% as good as Pilot Cups on dry track. I got interested of them and via Pasi I could get a nice deal, clearly cheaper than the Michelins. :)

Now there’s 38 laps of Nürburging Nordschleife behind with the new tires and they are excellent! Great grip and still a lot of thread left. No complaints about the performance!

But are these the ultimate tires for a daily driven club racer?
Hell no, they are almost loud as a Land Rover at 100 mph like one user told on Rennlist forums:D

Anyway, the conclusion is that Toyo R888 is a very fast recommended street tire, especially if you can bare with the noise. The clearly lower price compared to semi slicks from Pirelli and Michelin is also good news to your wallet.

We went with the stock sizes, 225/40/18 and 295/30/18 just to be sure to avoid any problems with the 4WD and fitting. With the new tires, I thought that something had to be done for the stock wheels. They looked a bit boring with the body kit too.

The wheels got the same color as the car but we left the outer edges unpainted. Now it looks like black wheels with silver lips. So, are we satisfied? Yeah, go black and don’t look bad!

The painting job was done by Puskan Auto Oy here in Finland and there’s no complaints, good work as usual! The owner’s a Porsche freak and you can spot his car(s)from the track day galleries, from example here.
